Visitar desde el aire casi cualquier punto del planeta, buscar los lugares de interés (escuelas, parques, restaurantes, hoteles…), comprobar las direcciones que sigue el tráfico en una carretera de Nueva York u observar la gran muralla china desde el espacio es posible, desde casa, gracias a Google Earth.
Así, Pekín aparece con una precisión sorprendente y permite visualizar detalles de la ciudad como si la sobrevoláramos a una altura de 300 metros. El Coliseo de Roma, las nieves del Himalaya, el museo Guggenheim de Bilbao, el Parque de los Príncipes de París, el Mar Caspio, El Cairo, Ankara o Estambul también se encuentran a un clic de cualquier ordenador.

Pero Google Earth permite mucho más que ver imágenes desde el cielo. Google Earth no es el único lugar de Internet que presenta la posibilidad de visualizar fotografías áreas. Para el territorio español, el Sistema de Información Geográfica de Parcelas Agrícolas (SIGPAC) muestra todo el territorio desde el cielo, gracias a fotografías a buena resolución combinadas con planos parcelarios del Catastro de Rústica.
